Dr. John Brooklyn

Dr. Brooklyn is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He graduated from Brown University’s Program in Medicine and did his residency at the University Of Vermont Medical Center. He has worked at the Community Health Centers of Burlington (CHCB) since 1993, one of the oldest Federally Qualified Health Centers in America. He has been involved with the University of Vermont Center of Behavioral Health since 1992 and has been involved in every buprenorphine study in that time frame. This research helped lead to the approval of buprenorphine in 2000 by the FDA and yielded valuable insights such as multiple day dosing, community reinforcement approaches, interim treatment using secure dispensing devices, and depot formulations. Dr. Brooklyn was one of the first physicians in the US to prescribe buprenorphine as a DATA 2000 prescriber and immediately incorporated this opioid treatment into the CHCB. He is a staunch advocate for treating substance use disorders in the primary care setting and has trained hundreds of his colleagues to do so.

Dr. Brooklyn has been the medical director of Vermont’s first Opioid Treatment Program since its opening in 2002-Howard Center’s Chittenden Clinic-and oversees a clinic population of almost 1000 patients. He has also been the medical director at one time of each of the 4 BAART clinics in Vermont-Newport, St. Johnsbury, Berlin, and currently works at the St. Albans’ office.

He currently serves on the University of Vermont Center on Rural Addiction Clinical Advisory Board-one of 3 national Health Resource Service Administration (HRSA) sites.
